LAKE PLACID A Lake Placid man remained in jail Wednesday on a $12,000 bond after his arrest for allegedly stealing his mother's debit card and withdrawing more than $1,000.

Vreen Crawford III, 20, was arrested Monday on warrants charging theft of $300 or more, fraudulently obtaining property under $20,000, five counts of criminal use of personal ID information and fraudulent use of a credit card more than twice.

On Dec. 26, 2008, Crawford allegedly took his mother's debit card from her purse and made the first withdrawal that evening. He told authorities he had gotten the personal identification number (PIN) when watching his mom use it on an earlier occasion, according to the warrant report.

Crawford reportedly made a total of five withdrawals, which he later confessed to, that came out to approximately $1,040.50, the report stated.

The mother told authorities the suspect was at her home on Dec. 26 and did have the opportunity to take the card.

Highlands County Sheriff's Deputy Thelma Joyce Huerta made the arrest.
