For one claiming to favor fewer abortions, President Obama, with less than two months in office, has unilaterally acted to use my taxes to federally fund abortions and human embryonic stem cell research.
Next on his agenda is to endorse the Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA) which will put into effect the most liberal abortion policy every introduced in the United States.
How any of these policies will help dampen the lust for abortions in our country is well beyond my pay grade to comprehend. Years ago I was a regular donor to the United Way Appeal. Deeming it to be a worthwhile endeavor I allowed my controller to set aside the recommended amount from my salary, in order to give my fair share to the organization. However, I later discovered that Planned Parenthood had suddenly appeared as a recipient of some of these funds. Being pro-life I immediately terminated my United Way contributions. Instead I earmarked the dollar amounts to other charities of my choice.
Unfortunately I do not have the same freedom when it comes to the government's abortion policies. If I tried (by not paying my taxes) I would find myself in deep trouble with the IRS! Perhaps though, I may still have a way out. We all know that during war time, conscientious objectors (those who on moral grounds would not kill other human beings) are given the option of not serving in combat duty.
Wouldn't it be reasonable then to expect that since the deaths of more than 40 million human lives have taken place in the United States since Roe vs. Wade (which far surpasses all American war time fatalities since the founding of our country,) I might be afforded a comparable concession the basis of my beliefs? I would certainly hope so, but I'm not holding my breath.
