A Davie man remained in jail Monday on a $2,500 bond after law enforcement spotted him driving recklessly in a car that had been reported stolen from a Sebring sports bar.
Brandon Daniel Smith, 22, of Davie, was arrested Saturday and charged with vehicular theft and petty theft.
Around 1:40 a.m. Saturday, police were following a 2003 Saturn that had been drifting from side to side and also ran a stoplight at U.S. 27 North and Flare Road, according to the arrest report.
Believing the driver was possibly drunk, law enforcement turned on their lights and tried to pull the car over. The Saturn reportedly sped away and police radioed dispatch to give them the car's last location.
Sebring Police officers and Highlands County deputies then began searching for the car, which was later found southbound on U.S. 27.
Law enforcement learned a woman had reported her Saturn stolen from the parking lot of Shooters Sports Bar, the report stated.
The victim told police her purse, which had her wallet, debit card and car keys inside, was taken by someone while she was distracted.
The purse was found outside - minus the keys - and returned. The victim left the bar and saw that her car was gone.
Surveillance footage allegedly showed the victim talking to another person while Smith came up and grabbed the purse.
Sebring Police Officer Rick Little made the arrest.
