Missing Girl Found

A 12-year-old girl first reported missing on Monday has been found.

Stormi Canter was found by members of the Highlands County Sheriff's Office's Criminal Investigation Unit on Wednesday around 5 p.m., at a home near Commerce and Maple avenues, according to her mother, Helen McKinney.

The search began after Canter never returned home from school Monday afternoon.

"Initially, she was just going to go hang out with friends for a little while," McKinney said.

After 5 p.m., came and went, Canter was afraid to come home because she figured her mom would be mad for not calling her after school and letting her know where she was, according to McKinney.

"She's a 12-year-old adolescent who is just going through whatever 12-year-olds go through," McKinney said.

The mother previously said her daughter was going from one friend's house to another, leaving any time it looked like she was about to be found. Canter was last seen getting into a black car near the Kenilworth Lodge, according to a missing juvenile bulletin.

Lt. Tim Lethbridge, with the CIU, said no arrests have been made in the case.

McKinney's Thursday was starting on a high note simply because this ordeal is behind her and her daughter is home, safe and sound.

"Right now, I just want her to know that I love her," McKinney said.
