The Highlands County Sheriff's Office is looking for a 12-year-old girl who never returned from school on Monday.
Stormi Layne Canter, 12, left Sebring Middle School at 3:15 p.m., and was last seen on Lakeview Drive, according to her mother, Helen McKinney.
"Her friend said she didn't feel like going home right after school," she said.
McKinney said her daughter would go from one friend's house to another every time she called trying to find out where she was.
An acquaintance told investigators Canter got into a black Toyota with two boys between 9:30 and 10 p.m., according to McKinney.
"Nobody knows these boys," she said.
McKinney added that the school resource officer has been talking with other students and feels confident that none of them know where she is at. Relatives in Miami and South Carolina have been notified, but say they have no information on Canter's whereabouts.
Lt. Tim Lethbridge, with the sheriff's office's Criminal Investigations Unit, said all deputies have a photo of Canter and are actively looking for her.
"At this time, we don't have any indication of foul play," but are taking the case very seriously because of her young age, Lethbridge said.
Canter is 5 feet 1 inches tall and weighs 145 pounds. She has blonde hair, blue eyes and wears braces.
