The Highlands County Historic Preservation Commission will take on a new project - putting historical artifacts on display in a public place - in mid July.
Empty, glass-enclosed displays cases were moved into the lobby of the Highlands County Government Center last month.
By mid July, those display cases will be filled with exhibits by preservation commission members.
Anne Reynolds, an archaeologist who specializes in Florida Native American history and pre-history, is putting up the first display, which will change periodically.
Notable Highlands County historic figures who will be remembered through the exhibits include: Melville Dewey, who invented the Dewey Decimal System; author Rex Beach; pioneering female legislator Edna Pearce Lockett; and Gabe White, retired Major League Baseball pitcher.
The first exhibit, planned to open in mid July, will take a look at prehistoric Native Americans, with a focus on Highlands County tribes. Other topics may also be included in the initial exhibit.
