Raw milk caution

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Susan Finney (June 11) writes that we should have what she call a constitutional basic freedom right to choose the consumption of raw milk. Raw milk can carry Listeria, a tough little bacterium. It can travel through the nervous system and cause meningitis, can infect the unborn child of a pregnant woman and can kill. In severe infections, fatality rate can be as high as 25 percent.

After ingestion of Listeria contaminated food, it can take up to two months for symptoms to develop. That makes tracking infected food difficult and food recalls useless, because contaminated milk would be long since consumed. How fortunate we are that pasteurization kills Listeria. If sale of raw milk were permitted, how widely could infection be spread before symptoms began to appear?

Choice should be informed; but remember, a lot of children drink milk. How can they make an informed choice?
