A 77-year-old Avon Park man driving a Mercury Grand Marquis lost control of his vehicle Monday morning and took out two columns at the Highlands Independent Bank branch at 400 U.S. 27 N., in Avon Park.
The crash took place at about 9:30 a.m., said Branch Manager Pat Graf on Monday morning. Fortunately, no one was injured, she said.
The driver's foot slipped off of the brake pedal and got stuck under the accelerator, she said. He was able to turn the steering wheel, but took out the two columns, which Graf said were decorative and not structural support columns.
"The building is fine," Graf said. "We just have to replace the columns."
There was very little damage to the car, she said.
Graf said a building inspector was leaving the building when the crash happened.
"He laughed and said he hasn't moved this fast since high school," she said.
Avon Park police investigated the crash. No further information was available from the Avon Park Police Department at press time.
