Group to observe anniversary of immigration ordinance

On the eve of the third-year anniversary of a proposed illegal immigration ordinance that was defeated in Avon Park, the League of United Latin American Citizens is having a recognition and awards dinner.

The event is slated at Homer's restaurant's Banquet Room A from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday.

There will live entertainment with Neidrana King and Tonya Colquitt, along with door prizes.

Special guests include: new LULAC State Director Jose Fernandez, S.E. United States and Puerto Rico Civil Rights Commissioner Victor Valdes, International Ambassador for Latin America and the Caribean LULAC Robert Canino, National Chairman of US Census for LULAC Edna Canino, and Steven Myers.

This chapter of LULAC has made July the offical Recognition and Awards Month each year followed by a candlelight prayer vigil at the Avon Park Community Center at 310 W. Main St. in Avon Park.

Following the gathering at Homer's, the candle light vigil will be at 8:30 p.m.
