I have to admit I was more than a little dismayed at the lack of attendance at the Jan.17 performance of "Don't Drink the Water" performed at the Highlands Little Theatre by local talent.
All the people out there griping about nothing to do in the area just don't listen.
For the past number of years, I have been giving praise to the actors and actresses at the Highlands Little Theatre, as well as the behind-the-scene people who do so much.
The set design does not arrange itself, the costumes do not just jump on the cast, the lines don't just flow out of their mouths, the lighting doesn't just happen, the cast just don't happen to enter, exit and so forth at the right time. It takes hours of work! So it was heartbreaking to see the number of empty seats in the theater as if people just don't care.
Cameron Reck was his usual super self in his part as the chef. I kid you not, that young man can act.
Kathy Zelenenki did herself proud playing Susan: Brad Dickerson was great as Axel Magee; it is hard to play the wimp and be strong at the same time.
I can't tell you one person in the cast who didn't play their part to the hilt. Art Harriman sure did a great job as director, for the whole play to come off like it did; the set design was beautiful.
I would like to know why each play isn't played to a packed house. I guess it is because "that's not the way they do it at home."
Guess what, when you are down here for months on end, this is home. My husband and I came here from Virginia, which is a great state, but Florida is our home now and we really don't care "how they did it at home." Get out and enjoy the life in this area and it just may seem more like home to you. This play runs until Feb. 1.
