Forty-one-year educator, Avon Park Middle School Principal Dan Johnson, has announced he will retire at the end of the school year.

Superintendant Wally Cox recently informed the school board of Johnson's plans to retire.

Cox said Johnson announced his plans early so that the district can begin a search for his replacement, who will want to have an input on the school's new classroom building, which is on schedule to open at the start of the 2009-10 school year.

Johnson has been the Avon Park Middle School principal for six years. Before that, he was the principal of Lake Placid Elementary School.

Johnson has served at many schools in the district.

"Then I was at Park Elementary and Avon Elementary and Woodlawn Elementary and Fred Wild Elementary and Sebring Middle School," he said. "I've been a principal for about 29 years here in the county."

The new building, which will have 13 classrooms and a lab, will eliminate all 13 portable classrooms at the school, Johnson said.

The school district is currently advertising the opening. The closing date for applications is Jan. 30.
