Conserve Something

»  Comments | Post a Comment

I read with interest the letter titled simply "Conservatives" printed on Jan. 20 in Highlands Today. Frankly, Roger, reading your letter was a bit confusing. I could not determine whether you intended to drop a bomb on all conservatives, or whether you were mainly critical of such people as George W. Bush, Dick Cheney, Karl Rove, etc.

I would be the first to admit that many people who claim to be conservatives seem to have lost sight of the meaning of the term. Also, I am aware that most liberals don't know the meaning or don't want to admit it.

Here are a few things we conservatives would like to conserve. We would like to conserve at least some vestige of the morality that made our country something of which we could be proud. We'd like to conserve some respect for the Bible, which offers peace and salvation to all who receive it. We want to conserve the Ten Commandments, which after all are the basis for all good law. Of course, they engender a guilt trip to all who desire to be crooked.

We'd like to conserve the freedom to exercise our religion without interference from the government, as the First Amendment promises us.

We want to conserve the life of the multitudes of future citizens, which are being destroyed by Roe vs. Wade, whether they turn out to be good, bad or indifferent! We want to conserve the old-fashioned basic family which can teach and exemplify the guidelines that should safeguard the next generation.

We'd like to preserve the Constitution as it was written and plainly stated, without the twisted interpretations attached by liberal courts. Please forgive us for trying to put a crimp in your plans for the future.
