Cost Estimate Received For LP Tower

A committee meeting to explore the possibility of reopening the Lake Placid Tower has received a cost estimate on bringing the structure to fire code.

The estimate, from A.B. Fire Systems in Sebring, ranges between $126,750 and $154,750. The difference between the two numbers is due to the prices for the fire alarm and fire sprinkler system.

According to an inspection report from the company's Scott Clark, a fire suppression and a fire alarm system will have to be installed. The fire suppression system will be a pump system supply for 9 floors.

Clark wrote that a fire break will need to be added on the fourth landing by means of an enclosed fire door and fire wall encompassing the stairwell on that landing.

The fire sprinkler system can be installed for between $68,000 and $92,000, depending on variances by the structural engineer, according to Clark. The alarm system will cost between $18,000 and $22,000.

Debra Worley, who is a member of the committee, said Tuesday she is "real happy" with the estimate.

"It's doable," Worley said. "Everybody wants it to happen."

The next step will be drafting a letter to current owner Mike Ivey. Ivey is one of at least four owners of the 270-foot tower since it opened about 50 years ago.

The letter will include the cost estimate, the committee's interest in forming a foundation to raise money for the project and a deadline. The committee hopes to hear from Ivey by the end of March.
