SFCC Auditorium Renovation An Important Move For Highlands

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Few buildings in Highlands County are more important than South Florida Community College's auditorium. That's why we support the renovation that board members will vote on this week. Updating and improving this wonderful facility is important to thousands of people in this county, and the rewards for having it is immeasurable.

The 10-month renovation being considered is impressive by any standard. The seating capacity will be increased a bit - from 1,440 to about 1,505, but it's not the seating number that is critical. What is important is the much expanded stage area and the improved seating.

In this plan, the backstage area will be much higher and larger to allow big drop-sets for shows to be used. Currently there just isn't enough room above the stage for some of the extravagant sets that today's shows require. The seating will include a balcony and box seats, which will allow the audience better viewing.

The almost $10 million renovation is being built with funds earmarked only for capital outlay and cannot be used for anything else. The money can't be used for scholarships, instructors or operational costs.

If approved, the renovation will begin at the closing of the April 7 Artist Series.

Renovating the auditorium is important because of all the cultural offerings the area enjoys from the much-used facility. Everything from Broadway plays to musical acts to local band concerts are held there. There's plenty of parking for evening events and it's a favorite for people of all ages. It's also a big revenue generator for the college.

SFCC's role is to serve communities in this region. It does this in a hundred different ways through educational services on all levels. It also enriches the community by bringing in events that otherwise wouldn't make a stop in Highlands County. With a much improved auditorium, the public will be well served for decades to come.
