An open letter to all basketball coaches in this area: We attended many basketball games this season and the refereeing was terrible! We suggest that all of you get together before next season with whomever is in charge of the referees and tell them you thought their performance, or really their non-performance, was and is unacceptable.
I know there is a shortage of referees and umpires for all sports but if they can't do any better than they did this past year they should just quit. The main problem seems to be that the referees tend to work these local games as if they were doing the pros! No fouls called, no whistles on jump balls until it's too late and the players are wrestling on the floor, and then dumb fouls called to make up for lack of calls. These things were all commented on by spectators for both teams. Refereeing and umpiring are not easy jobs but if they can't be done right, is it better to have them or not? I'm not sure.
