Highlands County Deputy Injured In Traffic Accident

A Highlands County Sheriff's Office deputy sustained minor injuries after his cruiser overturned Sunday around 11 p.m., on U.S. 27 near Red Lobster.

Deputy Oliver Worley was southbound on U.S. 27 and trying to catch up to a speeding motorcycle, according to Capt. Paul Blackman, with the patrol division. A vehicle then reportedly pulled out in front of the deputy, causing Worley to swerve and avoid impact.

Worley then lost control of his vehicle and overturned, Blackman said. He was trapped inside for some time before rescue workers were able to free him. The deputy was then flown to Lakeland Regional Medical Center as a precautionary measure before being released early Monday morning.

Blackman said Monday he had spoken with Worley's lieutenant to find out how the deputy was doing.

"Other than being bruised up quite a bit, he appears to be doing OK," Blackman said.
