A few months ago, we were all up in arms about the price of gas, trying to cut down the number of miles we had to drive. That uproar has died away. Now gas prices are creeping up again.
I would like to suggest that the people responsible for new roadways in Highlands County consider establishing a more direct route between Placid Lakes and the Leisure Lakes areas. The present drive between them is around 20 miles by way of Catfish Creek Road-Interlake-Route17-or U.S. 27 and Lake June Road.
A much shorter route is already partially in place if Wildflower or Daffodil roads were extended to Washington Boulevard in Placid Lakes; the distance could be cut to one third.
This route would take a lot of traffic off U.S. 27 for the drive from Placid Lakes to the Leisure Lakes area and would also allow for a shorter drive from Placid Lakes to Sebring, by way of what is known as the "back way" to Sebring, following Wildflower, Northern, Henscratch, Orange Blossom and Sparta roads.
The extension of Wildflower or Daffodil is about one mile. The new asphalt plant for Highlands County should make this one mile extension a reasonable cost at this time.
This new section of road is long overdue as a time and gas saver, to say nothing about the decreased traffic on U.S. 27.
