The case of an abandoned car that was struck by a southbound train about 10:30 p.m. Sunday remained under investigation on Monday, according to Highlands County Sheriff's Lt. Keith Starling.
The 1998 Dodge Neon was on the tracks near Sheriff's Tower Road when it was hit. No one was injured.
"There were no signs of forced entry and the ignition was not popped," said Starling. "The vehicle reeked of alcohol and there were containers of alcoholic beverages inside."
About 13 minutes after the car was hit, the car's owner contacted law enforcement and reported the car stolen.
The car's owner reported that he had gone to a Super Bowl party on Grouper Drive and that he was picked up at his home and dropped off at home. That's when he noticed the car was missing and called law enforcement.
Investigators were looking into possible conflicting statements about the incident, said Starling.
