Getting fired up

For those of us who get a kick out watching things go "bang" then sparkle, shopping for fireworks is like buying candy.

In the spirit celebrating the New Year's, Kelly Dunlop from Ontario, Canada, was browsing through some fireworks with names like Retaliation, Fire Storm and Full Velocity to liven up his neighborhood gathering.

"This is a treat for us because we don't have this back home," Dunlop said.

On Monday, his 15 year-old son, Cole Dunlop, came along to pick out some of his favorites.

"My favorites are the firecrackers...I like the ones that are really bright with lots of colors," Cole Dunlop said.

The Dunlops have traveled to Sebring for the past five years for New Year's to visit family and to celebrate with fire works, which are not allowed in Canada.

When they're here Kelly Dunlop says they stock up on the smaller fire crackers like the smokers.

"I'm just as big a kid as he his 15 year-old son is," Kelly Dunlop said.

On U.S. 27 and Grand Prix, Big Bang Fireworks' most popular firework among the adults are mortars.

Mortars like High Roller, shoot high into the sky then when it breaks it starts with a silver then a rising red, white and blue. The label even points out it's patriotic.

Others like Rolling Thunder, Terminator 24 and The Charging Griz are for big finales, said Justin Driggers, owner of Big Bang Fireworks in Sebring.

Driggers set up his tent on Dec. 26 but has been stocking up all year for this New Year's.

He has at least 100 different kinds of fireworks ranging from sparklers to rockets to cakes, which are a group of mortars with one fuse.

"Adults have as much fun as the kids do," Driggers said.
