Christmas is over, so the political season is starting.
One of the first races to draw attention is Highlands County Commission District 2, where Edgar Stokes is the incumbent. District 2 is southeast Highlands County.
Because he's 70 - Stokes says he's "only 70" - and he's completing his third term, political watchers are wondering if he'll run again.
"I've heard those rumors out there," Stokes acknowledged. "But I'm not ready to make that decision yet."
When his run-or-retire resolution comes, Stokes, a Republican, said he'll announce in time for others to make up their minds.
Two Republicans have said they intend to announce in 2010: Don Elwell and Pete Pollard.
Elwell managed the Quality Inn and the Kenilworth Lodge, and is currently in charge of publicity for Alan Jay.
"I'm about as independent a Republican as you can get," said the 6'7" Elwell, who is also known as the witty emcee for local events.
Pollard is executive director of the Sebring Community Redevelopment Agency, but he may be better recognized as an actor and director at Highlands Little Theatre, and as a former school board member.
"Right now, I plan on running," said Pollard, who recently moved from downtown - District 3 - to his retirement home in Spring Lake, which is in district 2.
"I've lived in Highlands County more than 30 years," said Pollard. "This is my home. I love this place, and I'm committed to public service. I would like to see changes made in the budget, planning and zoning. And I believe I have the experience in those areas to contribute."
