The news story regarding the school district financial rating was interesting.
I really liked the statement made by the Asst. Superintendent of Business Operations Mike Averyt, "What hurts the most was the legislature when they took our millage away."
I have news for you Mr. Averyt, the legislature didn't take your money, that money belongs to the taxpayers. As a taxpayer, I don't feel overly compelled to ever see that money restored until some of the fat is cut out of the Highlands County School District.
After all, taxpayers are paying for: (1) superintendent, (1) deputy superintendent, (3) assistant superintendents (9) directors and (10) managers at the district.
All those fancy and no doubt highly paid people and we still have three schools rated as a "D" on the statewide assessment tests.
Maybe it is time the school board looked into redirecting some of that money into the classroom where it can do some good.
With half of the property taxes in Highlands County already going to the schools, I think it is high time the bureaucrats stop thinking of how nice it would be to get more out of the taxpayers and start thinking about how to better allocate what you have.
