The Highlands County Sheriff's Office and the state fire marshal's office are continuing to search for the person or persons who reportedly tried to burn down a Lake Placid church Monday night.
Lt. Tim Lethbridge, with the sheriff's office, said a burglary was reported at Faith Baptist Church, located at 660 Holmes Ave., around 10:30 p.m. As of Tuesday afternoon, nothing had been reported missing.
"The suspects created a fire on the inside of the church," Lethbridge said. "It appears their intent was to burn the building. That did not happen."
No details were being released at this time regarding where, specifically, the fire was started, or how.
The total amount of damage was also not readily available. Arson appears to be the motive for the break-in, according to Lethbridge.
"I couldn't tell you why someone would want to set a church on fire three days before Christmas," he said.
Anyone with information should contact Det. Roger St. Laurent at the sheriff's office at 402-7200. Those wanting to remain anonymous and be eligible for a cash reward can call Heartland Crime Stoppers at (800) 226-8477.
