Recently, I noticed while driving through the neighboring towns of South Bay, Lake Placid, Lake Wales and Avon Park, that they have expanded their landscaping. The addition of sabal palms sets off the feeling of Florida and our native flora and trees. This is of great value to those coming south during the ice and snow from their summer homes in the north.
It has also been researched and found that landscaping improves the attitude of drivers and reduces road rage.
Having done some slight research, it didn't take long to discover that the town of Lake Placid has been working with federal money, private donations and various grants to give such a pleasing view of their landscaping along U.S. 27 and Interlake Boulevard.
Farther south on U.S. 27, south of South Bay and past the sugar cane fields, also has sections of approximately five sabal palms, planted in groups, where there is nothing but wetlands on either side.
This indicates that there must be road improvement funds available, to have accomplished this in unincorporated areas.
Surely, Sebring has the expertise and talent to find grants and funds to plant sabal palms, strelitzia regnae (orange bird of paradise) and perhaps large ornamental grass along the south side of Lake Jackson and the center medium of U.S. 27 just as the smaller towns of Lake Placid and South Bay have done?
If there is anyone with ideas of how to make this happen, perhaps we could make this a community project.
Various businesses could also contribute.
This would boost their business. In fact, a large billboard from the bank of Mid Florida actually advertises "Bank Green...Mid Florida...A tree planted with every car loan."
What better place to plant a tree than the above mentioned areas of Sebring? What better trees to plant than the sabal palm along our beautiful lake.
