No one was injured in a DeSoto City house fire Sunday morning that started in the fireplace and spread to the attic.
DeSoto City Fire Chief Swen Swenson said the age of the home, located at 6914 County Road 17, was a contributing factor in the blaze spreading from the chimney. The house was built in the 1920s.
"It was in the attic when first engines arrived," Swenson said. "It pretty much gutted the attic."
Firefighters were able to save a lot of the uninsured homeowner's personal property while they battled the blaze, according to Swenson. The attic suffered heavy damage, but the walls were secure.
"(At minimum), he's going to need an all new roof," Swenson said.
Members of the Highlands County American Red Cross responded to the scene and supplied him with cleanser to help salvage items from the home. He plans to stay with family and use his motor home for temporary shelter, according to a press release.
Firefighters from DeSoto City, Lorida, Leisure Lakes, Lake Placid and West Sebring departments assisted with the fire, according to Swenson.
