Soon, owners may be able to give their snakes and lizards to the state, no questions asked. Permits are required to possess, transport or import non-native species like Caiman crocodiles, lizards and boa constrictors. Some must have microchips.
However, in an effort to prevent unwanted, non-native animals from being released into the wild, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission voted last week to begin an amnesty program. If an executive order is approved, reptile owners can turn in their snakes without fear of prosecution for illegally possessing the animals.
Will you turn in your reptiles? Reporter Gary Pinnell is writing about the problem of owning snakes that get too large to keep. If you can contribute, please e-mail gpinnell@highlandstoday.com, or call 386-5828.
