Idiotic rules

»  Comments | Post a Comment

I have started to get used to the inane idiocy that our illustrious lawmakers in Washington have been spewing, but the new law I encountered today really takes the cake. Having been the victim of identity theft several years ago, I was advised by my bank and my lawyer to not sign credit cards but, instead, to print "Ask for ID" on the signature line. This made perfect sense to me as an excellent theft deterrent, so I have done it for years.

Now Congress, in its infinite wisdom, has decided that the federal government (post office, IRS, etc.) will not accept credit cards that are not signed. So, if a thief steals your credit card and uses it to buy stamps or pay off the IRS, those agencies will gladly accept it and not check the thief's ID. That has to be the most ridiculous, irrational and counter productive pieces of legislation to come along in years, with the possible exception of the bailout, cash for clunkers or "cap and trade."
