AP CRA loses money with Oktoberfest

Oktoberfest may not have been a money maker but it did attract thousands to Avon Park's downtown. And that was the point, said Wes Hoaglund, Community Redevelopment director.

"It was more successful than they we could have imagined," he said.

Hoaglund estimated that the event cost $9,174.68 and drew between 1,500 to 4,000 people to downtown Avon Park.

The city's revenue of $2,457 came from vendor booth sales, which were $15 for non-profits and $30 for all others, and drink sales.

Since the booth fees were low, vendors were able to introduce their businesses to residents and some were able to make profit off of sale items.

"We created a good impression of Avon Park in the minds of the people who came and joined the festival," Hoaglund said.

Although Oktoberfest set the city back $6717.68, Hoaglund said in future years creating an Oktoberfest that will make profit is not out of the question.
