Pharmaceutical companies and every other special interest group-industry do indeed have a strong grip on our elected representatives (editorial of Dec. 10.)
The people's business doesn't get done because of the need for elected officials to constantly raise money to afford to run for re-election.
Money comes from drug, oil, dairy, financial, meat and virtually every industry in the country as well as some outside the country to buy the votes of the peoples' representatives. In our system, voting out the incumbents simply replaces them with other special interest agents.
The solution is to change the method of financing elections to one that is funded from income taxes. The perpetual elections' industry, another special interest group, won't like that. Defenders of the status quo financial contributions are simply free speech. I believe freedom of speech should be limited to words.
Will anything change? Not likely since the incumbents would have to do it. But they're "hooked" on special interest money and won't risk alienating their benefactors.
Further, it looks like even the Supreme Court supports financial contributions as freedom of expression. Too bad for "We the people."
