H1N1 clinics open to the public

The Highlands County Health Department has opened three free H1N1 vaccination clinics to the public. The department estimates that each clinic is able to vaccinate about 1,000 people.

"We don't have to worry about running out and sending people home," said Thomas J. Moran, Highlands County Health Department planning consultant.

Just a few weeks ago the county's health department was distributing vaccines in small allotments to high risk groups due to a distribution shortage.

Now all residents, including those younger than 9 years old, can get vaccinated at the following locations.

Saturday, Dec. 12

Sebring Civic Center (located in the Altvater Cultural Complex)

356 W. Center Ave., Sebring

8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Tuesday, Dec. 15

American Legion Post 25

1490 U.S. 27 N., Lake Placid

1 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Thursday, Dec. 17

American Legion Post 69

1301 W. Bell St., Avon Park

1 p.m. to 7 p.m

The department is encouraging residents to get the vaccinations and practice daily prevention by washing hands frequently.
