Local Dixie teams had great showings at world series

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Youth baseball is alive and well in Highlands County. Two Sebring teams won their age groups' state titles and represented Florida at two different Dixie World Series tournaments. Both teams did a tremendous job.

The Ozone level, with 11 and 12 year olds, took third at their world series in Arkansas, and AAA level, ages 9 and 10, started strong and were knocked out Wednesday night. Both teams had a realistic shot at their respective titles.

The fact that two of these teams made it this far says a lot about the level of play in Highlands County. And it's not just about Sebring.

Avon Park, Lake Placid and Sebring combine for some exceptional players. Sure, there aren't thousands of kids like in the big metro areas, but clearly we have good players and coaches.

A lot of credit needs to go out to the people in the community who pitched in to help make these world series trips possible. It took a lot of fund raising to pay for these boys to travel so far and stay several days in hotels. The Ozone team had to deal with several rainouts, which increased the cost.

These boys represented their community and state well, and deserve a lot of praise for their hard work and sportsmanship.
