Bid approved for road work

LAKE PLACID - The Lake Placid Town Council has approved a bid from a Sebring company for road work on three streets in the town.

Excavation Point Inc. submitted the lowest of four bids for the resurfacing project of $26,727.

The work is scheduled to begin next week on Sudbury Drive, Marquata Drive and a portion of Serenity.

Oak tree removed

LAKE PLACID - A 25-foot live oak tree located near Schooni's restaurant on North Main Avenue was cut down Thursday following a vote of the town council earlier this week.

The council voted 3-2 Monday night to have the tree removed. Council members Steve Bastardi and Carol Smart voted for removal, while Ray Royce and Charles Wilson were opposed. Mayor Tom Katsanis cast the deciding vote. Katsanis said the merchants whose businesses are close to the tree wanted it taken out.

Concerns about safety and root growth were brought up when the matter was discussed with the council in May.

The cost to remove the tree is about $800, according to Jim Fulton, the town's public works director.
