Same refrain: Daddy is gone

»  Comments | Post a Comment

At two I could already chant nursery rhymes
By three I could read them
Cause those were the times
Daddy would stop and listen and see
Each bit of attention was golden to me.
For years I trailed along at his side
Giving him reason to view me with pride.
He was the center of my little world
I didn't care what it took
Just his little girl.
"Keep out of the way, Sweetie"
"Later we'll play."
My devotion to him grew by the day, still
Nothing I did could hold his attention
Often my hopes were dashed at the mention of
People to see and places to go
Quite unexpectedly, I'd never know
Returning from school to "Daddy is gone."
So sorry, Sweetie, but it won't be long.
Then I was grown and I moved away
Unable to be there when pain came to stay.
Vainly I tried, but the airlines were jammed
We fretted and waited but schedules were slammed
X-rays revealed a brain tumor deep
Your Daddy is gone ... the words made me weep
Zillions of memories from A to Z
Over them all what comes back to me
That same old haunting painful refrain
"Daddy is gone" again and again.
