Four Sebring Police officers slowly moved down the hallway of Sebring Middle School and made sure to check every room while searching for a shooter who had already fired off several rounds inside.
A few more shots were fired before the officers - guns drawn - cornered the assailant inside a classroom.
This was not an actual emergency situation but a scenario the officers were given as part of their Active Shooter Response Training.
The course is eight hours long and encompasses both classroom instruction and simulations at the middle school. It was held Tuesday for part of the SPD's staff, while the rest will have their training Thursday
"This is the first time we're doing this," said Lt. Karl Hoglund.
The officers took turns going into the hallway when it was time to run the simulation. Hoglund said they were only given the scenario and no specifics, like how many shooters were actually out there. They were told that students were also inside the building.
The shooter was firing off blanks in the hallways and the officers were using air-propelled rounds.
Cmdr. Steve Carr wanted to let residents in the surrounding neighborhood know those gunshots were simply part of the exercises.
