Whose freedom?

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Tuesday afternoon I listened as an eager, young Republican congressman assured me that government-run health care was bad for me because it would take away my freedom and prove costly. What he didn't say was that he already enjoyed government-run health insurance and didn't have to pay a cent for it.

When I turned 65, I was compelled to accept Social Security, forced to sign up for Medicare and had government-run prescription drug coverage crammed down my throat. I love freedom and financial responsibility. My friends who are under age 65 still have it, the freedom to decide if they can or cannot afford any kind of health insurance. Some, who suffer serious illness or debilitating injuries, have the freedom to decide if bankruptcy is a good idea. Some Americans, who have no health insurance, get to decide how to beg for medical care right here in their own country. Something is wrong with this picture!

Don't let politicians mess this up. Don't let them come home next month and tell us: "Well, we tried to give you universal health coverage, but didn't because it would take away your freedom and not be good for you."
