Fifth-grade students at Cracker Trail Elementary School competed in the Tropicana speech contest on Wednesday, according to Judy Santiago, teacher.
There were 18 finalists out of 147 student competitors. The top three winners were Nicole Cunningham, first place; Jenna Leigh LaBarr, second place; and Savannah Edwards, third place, said Pam Belanger, school health aide.
The first-place winner will compete on May 1, Belanger said.
Students prepared a two- to three-minute speech on a chosen topic. They were judged on speech, appropriate gestures, voice control, organization, content, originality, good grammar and clear pronunciation, Santiago said.
Judges for the event were Bud Morgan, William Hutchinson and Assistant Principal Page Green.
