Man charged with smuggling contraband into jail

A Sebring man remained in jail Monday on a $26,000 bond after being arrested Sunday for allegedly smuggling marijuana into the Highlands County Jail.

Eugene Lonnie Johnson, 34, of 100 Blue Fish Drive, Sebring, was also charged with misdemeanor possession of marijuana.

Johnson was initially placed under arrest for an outstanding warrant. As the suspect was being handcuffed, deputies saw an "unknown green object," according to the arrest report. It turned out to be a baggie of marijuana, which Johnson said was not his.

At the jail, Johnson was asked if he had anything else on his person that might have been missed during the search. The suspect said he had nothing and again told authorities the marijuana was not his, the report stated.

Inside booking, a partially-smoked cigar "blunt" was allegedly found in Johnson's right shirt pocket. Tests on the blunt came back positive for the presence of marijuana.

Johnson told authorities the blunt was not his, either, the report stated.

Highlands County Sheriff's Deputy Kenneth Cooper made the arrest.
