Four Highlands County residents were injured Tuesday night following a two-vehicle accident in Polk County.
William Ruester, 86, and Constance Peiffer, 81, both of Avon Park, were taken to Lakeland Regional Medical Center in critical condition. The two are neighbors, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
In the second vehicle, Vanessa Davidson, 21, and her 6-month-old child, Kaylen Davidson, both of Sebring, were also taken to Lakeland Regional. Vanessa was critical, while Kaylen was in serious condition, the FHP said.
Representatives at Lakeland Regional could not give an update on the victims' status Wednesday because family members had not given authorization to release that information.
Ruester was northbound on U.S. 27/98 in a 1995 Dodge Caravan and approaching Charles Street. Davidson was southbound on U.S. 27 in a 2005 Chevy Cobalt when Ruester reportedly turned left in front of her.
The left front side of the Cobalt hit the right front of the Caravan, the FHP said. All those involved in the accident were airlifted to Lakeland Regional.
Seat belts were used by all victims at the time of the crash. Damage to the vehicles was $15,000. The accident remains under investigation and charges are pending, according to the FHP.
