Experts Sought For LP Utilities Advisory Committee

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Lake Placid Town Councilman Ray Royce wants to be able to make more informed decisions on sewer and water issues.

In order to do that, Royce would like to see the council establish a utilities advisory committee that could provide expertise and serve as a sounding board for Gary Freeman, the town's utilities director.

The five-member committee would be made up of residents living within the town limits, but could include some people who live outside of Lake Placid, according to Royce. It probably would meet on a quarterly basis.

Royce said that members will ideally include engineers who have worked on utility systems, those who have run a municipal utility or have experience in the finances of a utility. An individual who has been involved with a water management district is also needed.

"The reality is the Lake Placid staff is very busy and council members don't have expertise in utilities," Royce said. "We need another set of eyes used to playing in that world."

Royce said whether the committee is activated will depend on if there are enough qualified people who are interested in participating.

Royce said he is "amazed" at the level of expertise in Highlands County including retired professors. He is hoping there are people willing to help the town "see a level of improvement to our customers."

Those who might like to serve on the committee are asked to contact Arlene Tuck, town clerk, at 699-3747.
