Mark Darling's recent guest column, "In Defense of Sheriff Benton," is not a defense of the sheriff, but rather a diversion from issues. Darling, who will ramble to anyone who will listen to him, is friends with Sheriff Benton and former FHP command personnel who retired or were demoted during an internal affairs investigation. Mr. Darling doesn't even know Ron Grimming. Sour grapes and dirty politics? You bet!
Darling's statement that Grimming was involved in the sheriff's elections is false. This attempt to discredit Grimming during the campaign is again to divert attention away from the issues. Grimming never once become involved in any sheriff's election, and at no time was a trooper forced to retire for not getting involved in local politics. Darling needs to provide proof of his statements, or abstain from his ramblings of a former disgruntled employee.
Darling's accusations that Grimming had a staffed Dade County office, utilized a state plane to fly from Tallahassee to Miami every Friday so he could go home to Key Largo are not true. Flight logs are public record and are available for all FHP aircraft.
Authorized by the executive director of the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, Grimming opened an office at an existing FHP facility in Miami. This measure was approved by the governor andCabinet to provide a greater management presence in South Florida. Contrary to Darling's assertions, no rent or additional expenses were incurred, and Grimming shared clerical staffing with the local FHP office.
Grimming is credited with being an innovative law enforcement leader who brought FHP into the 21st century. Grimming's accomplishments have been recognized nationally. A review of his evaluations reflects the highest possible evaluation and is indicative of a knowledgeable dedicated public servant.
Darling's comments are irresponsible and lack credibility. Again, an attempt to divert attention from issues involving character, integrity and honor. Something Mr. Darling and his friends know nothing about.
