Big Crowds Learn About Going Green

Area residents got a look at numerous ways to save energy and money Saturday at the county extension office's "Think Green" event.

Hundreds of people listened as speakers from companies such as Progress Energy discussed energy audits, the Energy Wise program and even hydrogen cars.

About 20 vendors had displays on everything from mosquito-eating fish to hardwood flooring that's made from sustainable materials.

LaGrow Irrigation in Lake Placid had a display of KVAR units, which install on homes and businesses that reduces electricity consumption from 6 percent to 60 percent. Outside electrical service ties into the box, which "cleans" the power. The electrical cycle normally varies, but this device keeps it at one constant flow. Everything from refrigerators to pool pumps to air conditioners run much more efficiently.

Mike Hinson, who works for LaGrow, said the Avon Park water facility cut about $800 per month by installing a KVAR unit. But LaGrow was also pitching computerized sprinkler system controls that provide much more efficiency and less water use. Owners can set sprinklers in shady areas to run less than other areas where direct sunlight dries lawns and gardens.

Kim Rucks, with GHC Motorsports, had a selection of scooters that are becoming more popular due to their incredible gas economy. Some models get as much as 123 miles per gallon.

"More and more older folks are buying them," Rucks said about the scooters.

Insurance is about $120 a year on the scooters, she explained, and the larger scooters can easily handle higher traffic speeds.

Robbins Nursery had a variety of plants that do well in the local area and require little water.

A Progress Energy spokesman told the crowd that home inspections can be ordered to search for ways to save power. He told the audience that there are many ways to save money and energy, and one in particular is to not place refrigerators or freezers in hot garages.

More "green" fairs are planned by the Highlands County Extension Office in the coming months.
