John McCain, the Republican candidate, is fond of asking, Who is Barack Obama?
Let's turn that question on him. Various media outlets and pundits talk about what an honorable man Sen. McCain is. I say evidence is quite to the contrary.
Each day sees more conservatives decrying the impetuous and foolish selection of a vice presidential candidate chosen primarily to excite a base and peel off supporters of Senator Clinton.
These people suggest rightly that the decision says much about Senator McCain. What other important decisions will be based on such flimsy and self indulgent grounds?
Add to that the appalling and misleading accusations made about his opponent and it becomes very difficult for a thinking person to support his candidacy. That is, of course, unless you are of the mindset expressed recently by a patron of a local fire hall dinner who exited the hall with an angry comment about Barack Obama.
Ask yourself if the angry and nasty man who appeared at all three presidential debates and, along with his interesting choice for vice president, conducts rallies that incite his assembled supporters to shout and speak racial remarks and threaten the safety of his opponent without condemnation, is the person you see as the leader of the free world.
Consider fact checking the promises each candidate makes to see whether they would actually benefit you and your family. George W. Bush divided this country and drove it into the ground. John McCain wants to beat it with a stick! Senator, you are on that "low road to the highest office!"
Please channel those "better angels." Ask which candidate has the potential to make the necessary changes in direction that will benefit all of America's citizens. We're better than just being concerned about ourselves. Whatever your choice, stay engaged and informed if we are to move forward and bring back the strength and respect that has long been a hallmark of the country we all love. Read, think, vote.
