A Miami man faces numerous charges following a Tuesday traffic stop that officers say became physical.
Delano Dwight Dixion, 37, of 20180 NE 2nd Ave., Apt. X19, Miami, is charged with one count of driving with an expired license, two counts of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer (LEO), two counts of battery on an LEO, two counts of resisting an LEO with violence, one count of resisting an LEO without violence, four counts of obstructing police and one count of giving a false ID, according to the Highlands County Sheriff's Office.
Deputies conducted the traffic stop on U.S. 27 near Tomoka Boulevard for an expired license plate decal. The driver was identified as Steve Cross by what appeared to be a Virgin Islands driver's license, according to the arrest report.
Cross told deputies he did not reside in Florida, but information obtained from local records provided an address for him in Sebring. Law enforcement believed there was probable cause showing that Cross was operating a vehicle without a valid license based on the information.
As deputies tried to arrest him, the subject tried to run and all involved fell to the ground in a struggle. Cross, who was later identified as Delano Dixion via fingerprints, took deputies' Tasers and attempted to use them against the officers, according to the arrest report.
One of the deputies was struck in the chest by the Taser's drive stun, which was blocked by a protective vest. Dixion did, however, elbow and kick the two law enforcement officers as they tried to place him under arrest.
The subject also prevented the deputies from using their hand-held radios to call for assistance. Eventually, backup did arrive and they were able to detain the 5-foot-9-inch, 170-pound Dixion.
During his booking, deputies learned Dixion was wanted out of Miami for numerous charges, including aggravated battery.
Deputy Kenneth D. Cooper made the arrest and was assisted by Deputy Mike Weed.
