Two Lake Placid Middle School teachers have earned for their classrooms mini-grants sponsored by the Highlands County Education Foundation. Rashauna S. Portee, a sixth-grade social studies teacher and Carol Hubbell, an eighth-grade language arts teacher, earned he grants.

Portee's grant will give students the opportunity to actively engage in hands-on learning in her classrooms, according to a press release. In the context of learning about ancient civilization, students will make bricks. This activity will deepen the understanding of the process used by ancient civilizations to build cities.

The chicken mummification project will engage students in research to reveal different aspects of Egyptian civilization. Students will also create T-shirts to wear during their "Taste of China" activity.

Hubbell's grant will provide English language learners resources to aid them in the instruction of content area thematic units. The purchase of the Oxford Picture Dictionaries, the Monolingual English Picture Dictionaries, Consumable Workbooks and the Teacher's Pack, will increase vocabulary, build background knowledge by linking prior knowledge in their native language through visual representations, and ultimately aid students in all content areas.

The Highlands County Education Foundation is a direct support organization for public Pre-K-12 Highlands County schools
