Family Night Showcases Fred Wild's Young Readers

Trying to spot a small, hidden duck on every page, 3-year-old Tyson Simpson discovered books can be fun.

His mother, Sherrell Simpson, pointed out the words to her son that matched the pictures in the book they received Thursday evening at the Family Reading Night at Fred Wild Elementary School.

Soon 4-year-old Tilon wanted to see what his brother and mother were up to and all three followed the story of the "Fat Cat on a Mat." Tilon received his own book - "Shark in the Park."

Sherrell attended the family night to see her older children perform - a son in third grade and a daughter in fifth grade.

After the Fred Wild Elementary students and their families dined on hot dogs in the cafeteria, the students rehearsed one last time in their classrooms for their big performance back in the cafeteria.

The first-graders recited a poem about penguins.

The second-graders lined up for a rapid-fire reading of a play called "Click, Clack, Moo: Cows that Type." The typing cows were making notes to try to trick the farmer into getting electric blankets for them.

A couple of third-graders showed the dioramas they created for a book report assignment.

The fourth grade recited a poem, about medical excuses for missing school, by Shel Silverstein called, "Sick."

The students recited, "I have the measles and the mumps, a gas, a rash and purple bumps. My mouth is wet, my throat is dry, I'm going blind in my right eye."

A Reader's Theatre presentation by a group of fifth-graders presented the stories of "Queen Midas" and "The Pig Who Cried Wolf."

Literacy resource teacher Delilah Marquesz said the school's book fair continues 8 a.m. - 3 p.m., Monday and Tuesday in the school's media center.

Books for readers of all ages, including adults, are for sale to raise money to purchase library books for the media center.
