Apple Sale Celebrates 39 Years Of Charity

By the time she arrived at Lakeshore Mall Thursday, Til Widenhoft, of Sebring, had already made plans for most of her portion of the 80,000 pounds of apples sold during the Gene Scheck Rotary Apple and Cider Sale.

Widenhoft has likely attended all 38 previous annual apples sales. Her husband was a 50-year Rotarian.

With a delighted glint in her eye, Widenhoft talked about baking apple pies and making apple sauce with her Fuji and McIntosh apples.

More than 100 Rotarians sold 12 varieties of apples and apple products. Apples arrived in two fully loaded semitrailers from Clyde, Ohio.

Rotary organizer Bruce Lybarger said 80 percent of the apples were pre-sold and were picked up by the public or delivered by volunteer Rotarians.

The event benefits several local charities, including New Testament Mission, Big Brothers and Big Sisters, The Salvation Army and the Boys and Girls Club.

"Without the support by the public and the help of so many volunteers, we couldn't contribute so much to the county," said Lybarger.
