An Avon Park woman died following a one-vehicle accident Thursday afternoon in Polk County.
Kristel J. Skipper, 36, succumbed to her injuries at Lakeland Regional Medical Center after being flown from the scene with critical injuries.
The accident happened at 4:30 p.m., when Skipper reportedly drove her 2000 GMC sport utility vehicle onto the grass median near County Road 630-A, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The vehicle was originally traveling northbound on U.S. 27.
After driving onto the median, Skipper's SUV then re-entered the northbound lanes of U.S. 27 and overturned several times, the report stated.
The driver was ejected, while the vehicle came to a final rest in the grass median on its roof. The SUV sustained $7,000 worth of damage.
It is still unknown whether the crash was alcohol-related, the FHP said. Skipper was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident, the report stated.
The northbound lanes of U.S. 27 were closed for approximately an hour as a result of the crash.
