A Sebring man was pronounced dead Sunday afternoon at the Heart of Florida Regional Medical Center in Davenport, after his 1995 Chevrolet van veered off U.S. 27 North and crashed into a pasture near Haines City.

Polk County Sheriff's Office officials believe the death of Melvin L. Steelman, 63, may have been medically related.

According to Donna Wood, public information officer for the Polk County sheriff's, the crash took place at about 4:30 p.m. Sunday when Steelman and his wife, Melody, 51, were headed northbound on U.S. 27, south of State Road 544, approaching Haines City.

Steelman reportedly was in the outside lane in their van when he steered to the inside lane and changed back to the outside lane before he slowed the van down and drove off the road hitting a fence post in a pasture.

The van sustained minimal damage, Woods said, and the victim's wife was not injured. No other vehicles or pedestrians were involved in the crash.

Steelman was unresponsive and was transported to the Heart of Florida Regional Medical Center's emergency room where he died, according to reports.

His wife reported that Steelman had complained about not feeling well earlier that day, Woods said.
