AVON PARK - An Alabama man remained in Highlands County Jail in lieu of $40,000 bond after sheriff's investigators say he threatened and stalked his ex-wife as well as threatened to hurt or kill a Department of Children and Families investigator.
Calvin Earl Suggs, 40, of Foley, Ala., was booked into jail Wednesday on charges of aggravated stalking, following, harassing, or cyber-stalking after court injunction and intimidation by written threat to kill or injure.
According to sheriff's central records, two warrants were signed by Judge Olin W. Shinholser, and issued on Dec. 8, 2005, for the arrest of Suggs, one in connection with writing a threatening letter to a DCF employee in July of 2005 and the second for violation of an injunction for protection against domestic violence in October 2005, issued by Judge J. David Langford in 2002.
According to a sheriff's arrest narrative, on July 21, 2005, Suggs allegedly wrote a letter and mailed it to a child protective investigator with DCF in which he made threats to kill or injure the worker at the Division of Child Support Enforcement.
According to Sheriff's Det. Melanie Kelly, Suggs is court ordered to make child support payments to the Florida Department of Revenue, "but disputes this action as being unlawful and against his rights as a citizen." In the case of his ex-wife, the victim is a 42-year-old, who reportedly was threatened by Suggs from April 2002 to Oct. 28, 2005.
On April 25, 2002, Langford issued a final judgment of injunction for protection against domestic violence with minor children, with the victim as the petitioner and Suggs listed as the respondent.
The final judgment of injunction was personally served on Suggs on Aug. 3, 2005, by a Bay Minette, Ala. Sheriff's deputy.
On April 30, 2002, May 1, 2002, and June 10, 2002, the victim filed reports with the Highlands County Sheriff's Office that Suggs had unlawfully entered her Avon Park residence, in violation of the injunction. On June 10, 2002, Suggs reportedly left a handwritten note on the door with the words "(victim's first name omitted), I will get you for everything you did, I will get my kids back, signed Sport." On Jan. 16, 2003, Suggs wrote a letter to the Department of Revenue, Division of Child Support Enforcement, making "credible and believable Threats against the life of (the victim)." He also threatened her brother, sister, boyfriend and his family, saying all "could face the ultimate price." On Feb. 27, 2004, Suggs again wrote a threatening letter to the victim.
Suggs was arrested on Nov. 29, 2006, in Okeechobee County on similar charges. On Oct. 29, 2007 additional charges were added, according to the Okeechobee County courthouse.
Suggs was convicted on charges of aggravated stalking and making written threats to injure and was sentenced to a 10-year-prison term. He was transported on June 25 to the Highlands County Jail to face these local charges.
It was not clear if it was the ex-wife was a victim in the Okeechobee County court cases.
Even if Suggs was to make his $40,000 bond here, he is being held for return to Okeechobee County, a sheriff's central records spokeswoman said Friday.
