Construction Worker Airlifted After Accident

AVON PARK - A construction worker was airlifted to an area trauma center on Monday, after he suffered a head injury working at a Chapman's Custom Homes construction site behind the Avon Park Pizza Hut restaurant.

A male construction worker was airlifted, possibly to Tampa or Lakeland, and two other male workers were injured.

"It appears to be a faulty truss," said company Supervisor Scott Chapman.

A metal fastener, called a gusset plate, came loose and fell off, he said.

"When the gusset plate breaks, there's nothing holding it up essentially," Chapman said.

The extent of injuries to the other two workers was unknown.

The company is building a three-building 24-unit apartment complex at the site.

Avon Park Fire Department firefighters were called at about 11:08 Monday. Officials set up a landing zone at a high school baseball field.

The helicopter lifted off at about 11:45 a.m. to a trauma center.
