Asphalt Plant

»  Comments | Post a Comment

I see in Tuesday's paper that our county asphalt plant is already taking shape. I read with interest how the mix that finally hits the street is contrived.

I am afraid that Mr. Cool is operating under a different set of standards than the state of Florida, who will supervise all the production of asphaltic concrete placed on Florida roads, and since the debacle of a few years ago, I'm sure they will be quite interested in the recipe that our engineers come up with.

As a matter of fact, all asphalt placed on Florida roads must meet a set of specifications set up by the state, and if Florida operates as the state of Ohio does, every pound of the mix will be monitored and frequent testing performed to make sure that state specifications are met.

I make note of the state of Ohio because I worked out of Cincinnati for years as an employee of one of the best and most trusted engineering firms east of the Mississippi and probably in the country, the H.C. Nutting Co.

I sure hope the county is not going off half-cocked on this project. They are in for a lot of trouble even when the plant operates as it is built to run due to differences in materials being combined and human frailties.

It will be fun watching this plant get into operation and certification by the state. Hope they will let me watch.
